Video Production: E3 is Dead, Long Live State of Play
Background
In the beforetimes, when we got our gaming info in the form of ancient relics known as “magazines,” the E3 convention was the focal point of gaming news. Here, journalists from all over the world would descend upon Los Angeles to see what the big dogs of the industry had to offer, each publisher attempting to outdo one another with expensive booths and extravagant presentations to generate as much hype as possible.
But as the internet got bigger and developers became less beholden to prehistoric publishing paradigms (say that three times fast), some started to realize it could be more effective to connect with fans directly. When Sony Interactive Entertainment needed an agency to re-spec their PlayStation event strategy, Off Base was ready to get the hype train rolling.
Challenge
The slow decline of E3 came to a head during the COVID pandemic, when we were all inside Chloroxing our groceries, doomscrolling TikTok, and catching up on our gaming backlogs while we avoided large groups of humans.
To keep players engaged, PlayStation wanted to enhance their online presence with a series of livestreams, distributed GLOBALLY, blasted through the social channels we were all glued to throughout the year. Considering the TOP SECRET nature of the content, security was a top priority, so they needed a partner that could be like Frodo and “keep it secret, keep it safe.”
Solution
Off Base is, and continues to be, STOKED to serve as PlayStation’s right-hand to fully develop its livestream digital showcase program, which to this day serves as a platform for the PlayStation announcements that make us jump out of our seats. Over the last few years, Off Base’s team-up with PlayStation has involved crafting comprehensive State of Play event naming and prototyping phases, establishing a look-and-feel toolkit, building and maintaining a robust security plan for the program, as well as wrangling the massive production involved and localization support in ensuring the show is globally accessible for multiple territories and languages.
Results
PlayStation and Off Base continue to be an S-Tier team-up, with the State of Play program serving as a globally anticipated and celebrated platform, with each of its shows raking in millions of global views per episode. We’re always excited to see what they have cooking next, but you’ll just have to wait for the next show to see for yourself.
